Environmental Stewardship - Cumulative Reduction
During his tenure with Lighting Solutions of Illinois (Lighting Agency) management supported G Michael Gold's participation in the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders (IRTBA) Green Council. This lead to further involvement and inclusion with a very talented group of industry professionals in compiling the Illinois Living and Transportation (I-LAST) document for 'green roadbuilding'. NOTE: for additional information on the IRTBA and I-LAST initiative - please navigate to the PARTNERS link on this website.
Mr. Gold learned thru the I-LAST effort about taking a broad-based initiative to environmental stewardship whereby multiple, responsible design actions are underway that contribute to the overall impact of responsible roadway design/construction.
Utilizing this concept for the Cobbler Square project (which is relatively small in 'scale') design integrity and luminaire selection are significant in that they:
- Achieve lighting performance objectives
- Maintain aesthetic goals
- Save energy
Fixtures are by Philips Lumec (Calisto Series) - a company that truly combines performance and aesthetics in fixture design. The wall-mounted and post top luminaires incorporate both HID (metal halide) light sources for performance and LEDs to illuminate the white decorative ring at the top of the fixture.
Working iteratively with the firm of Sullivan Goulette - the final design features Calisto luminaires that (when activity levels dictate and time constraints allow) the HID light sources can be turned off, yet the decorative ring can remain illuminated for visual affect. In addition, LED bollards (interior courtyard pathway) and LED 'beacons' (signage) were used in lieu of HID sources. - further reducing energy.
Bottom line - The Cobbler Square project is an outstanding example of responsible design that results in a cumulative reduction of energy without sacrificing aesthetics.
